Hine Poa

Hine has been a teacher of Maori language for more than 40 years and has tutored and performed with many kapa haka groups. She has taught all sorts - from pre-school children to seniors - and has been involved in regional and national competitions and in performances locally and overseas - including at the opening of the Sydney Opera House. She's still very busy with creative and community work, and we're extremely fortunate to have Hine coming to teach us some poi.

About Hine's Workshop

At the poi session, Hine will demonstrate how to make a poi. Following that the group will make their own poi. Then the group will divide in half, with one group will learn a single short poi and the second group will learn a long poi. These will be done to simple short waiata.

Participants will need to bring: A large plastic shopping bag, 2 different coloured full balls of double knitting wool, and cellotape. (Bring your own if you can, and bring extra for those who can't! The Wellington people will provide extra too - and scissors.)

See the programme for times of Hine's poi workshop!
